Ship performance in ice channels narrower than ship beam: Model test and numerical investigation

چکیده
During escort and convoy operations, an icebreaker opens a channel while the escorted or convoyed ships follow path along channel. If assisted ship is wider than which creates, created cannot fit ship. Thus, has to break some ice by itself. This herein referred as navigation in ‘narrow channel’. The performance of narrow investigated here. For this aim, model-scale test going through channels with different widths thicknesses firstly conducted. After that, numerical simulation model scenarios implemented in-house program dedicated for operation ice. correctly captured main features resistance change function width, indicates its validity tool. Subsequentially, simulations are several other order gain general insights into Focus given influence width on ships' encountered attainable speed findings these useful decision making tools.

Numerical Calculations of Ship Induced Waves
Nowadays, various numerical methods are developed to extend computational fluid dynamics in engineering applications. One of the most useful methods in free surface modeling is Boundary Element Method (BEM). BEM is used to model inviscid fluid flow such as flow around ships. BEM solutions employ surface mesh at all of the boundaries. In order to model the linear free surface, BEM can be modifie...
متن کاملModel identification and dynamic analysis of ship propulsion shaft lines
Dynamic response analysis of mechanical structures is usually performed by adopting numerical/analytical models. Finite element (FE) modeling as a numerical approach plays an important role in dynamic response analysis of complex structures. The calculated dynamic responses from FE analysis are only reliable if accurate FE models are used. There are many elements in real mechanical structures w...
متن کاملModeling of Ship Propulsion Performance
Full scale measurements of the propulsion power, ship speed, wind speed and direction, sea and air temperature, from four different loading conditions has been used to train a neural network for prediction of propulsion power. The network was able to predict the propulsion power with accuracy between 0.8-2.8%, which is about the same accuracy as for the measurements. The methods developed are i...
متن کاملModel based ISAR ship classification
This paper presents an investigation of ISAR image classification based on a comparison of range-Doppler imagery to 3D ship reference models. This comparison is performed in the image domain by estimating the motion of a sequency of ISAR images, generating 3D reference models corresponding to the same motion and matching the models with the given ISAR images. The effect of estimation error in t...
متن کاملGPU Modeling of Ship Operations in Pack Ice
The paper explores the use of an event-mechanics approach to assess vessel performance in pack ice. The methodology is developed using massively parallel programming strategies on a GPU enabled workstation. A set of simulation domains, each containing hundreds of discrete and interacting ice floes is modeled. A simple vessel is modeled as it navigates through the domains. Each ship-ice collisio...
